25.12.98 (Christmas Day)- Jingle bells, the dog smells
It's Christmas Day! I didn't think I would be writing a journal entry today but there are a couple of reasons why.... one is that Polly ('Carpe Diem') made a statement about nobody updating their journals at Christmas time and the other is that I fancied some time out from the family, just listening to music and drinking my vodka and orange (A woman's drink? Which sexist moron said that? hehe).
As you can imagine if you're used to any kind of traditional family Christmas in the UK, I have already eaten and drunk quite a lot and so I am feeling a wee bit squiffy but quite content all the same. I made some silly joke at the table and everyone nearly split their stomachs from laughing so we've all had a good laugh too. I have phoned two friends already today to wish them 'Happy Christmas' and had a bit of a chat with them. It makes a change for me to have someone to phone on Christmas Day who I really feel I need to make the effort for (although it was not much of an effort because I wanted to talk to them!). I have at least one other friend to phone yet but I have to wait a while because of the time difference.
It's strange and everyone who reads this will probably 'tut' in disbelief but I still don't feel all that Christmassy! I woke up fairly late for a Christmas morning and had some breakfast and a chat with my Grandma and sister in the kitchen and then my Mum eventually got up and made a coffee for my Dad. When everyone was up we went into the front room and started the present opening thing. There were a few big presents this year and it was decided to get those out of the way first because there was not room for them in the living room and ....well I think everyone just wanted to see the reaction from those presents first anyway. Hehe. Mine was one of the big presents and it turns out that most of my family had clubbed together to get me a VCR!!! I really didn't think they would spend that much money this year and I am not sure just how much it would have cost them but its a really nice model. It is perfect because it means that I will now have my own computer, hi-fi, TV and VCR for when I move into my own place. I even have my own coffee table now and a few other bits and pieces so hopefully I will not need a lot of expense to kit the place out.
The presents that I got for people seemed to go down well and out of all of us I think the dog got more excited than anyone! he kept sticking his nose into the boxes and pushing at the presents to see if he could find out what they were. Of course some of the presents were from him (mostly bought by my sister...the big softy) and he has eaten so much that the little bugger has terrible wind! Luckily because of my cold I can't smell it. Hahahaha. My poor family is suffering though as he makes his way round the house gradually filling the air with the pungent smell. Pets... dontcha just love 'em?
Oooh hey, that vodka and orange is getting rid of my headache! Yay! Three cheers for cold/flu pills and alcohol! Hehehe. Going to make another international phone call now (God save me when the phone bill comes). See ya!
