29.10.98 - My mother is a gibbon

Ok, so my mother is not really a gibbon but she does a really good impression! I'm not kidding either. If you saw "The Zoo Keepers" tonight on BBC1 (fly on the wall documentary set at Paignton Zoo in Devon) then you'll no doubt remember 'Java' the female gibbon. She had the most outrageous calling sound that had my Mum and I in stitches with laughter. When my Mum started doing an impression...well.. I nearly stopped breathing because I was laughing too much! You know, she'd kill me if she ever knew I was putting this information out on the web! Sorry Mum, but it's just too funny to keep quiet. I suppose the real reason I am mentioning this is to give you an insight into the miraculous change of mood that has occurred. I have just had the most wonderful day and I feel so refreshed and cheered up. The gibbon thing was just a symbol of how the day has been.

Work was not particularly marvellous but at the same time I didn't feel as stressed or hassled. The only stressful moment was when the deputy director of finance and information came to see me about some statistics on bed utilisation within the hospital. He was taking the average length of stay for an episode and multiplying it by the number of finished consultant episodes. The figure he was coming out with was about 50 different to the actual occupancy figures and he couldn't work out why. Luckily it was just because he was being a plonker and forgetting that the length of stay on my spreadsheets is rounded to the nearest decimal place. When you multiply something with one decimal place by about six or seven thousand then of course you are going to get a difference of about 50 or so in the outcome because of the rounding. Ummm.... are you asleep yet? Well who knows. Someone with a particular interest in hospital statistics might read this some day and at least they will get something from this paragraph. Hehehe.

Oh, Sahra came in just as I was phoning my friend and I had an awkward moment where I had to tell her I was in a private call (well I had to... she just came in and sat down in Pauline's chair waiting for me to finish the call I had only just started!). I felt a bit rude telling her but then she should not have just walked in and sat down like that. Oh and the fact that I am not supposed to make personal calls from work has nothing to do with it. Hehe.

Anyway to cut a long story short, nothing terribly eventful happened and I was pretty much left to my own devices all day. I only have one more day of work to put up with and then I can go out and have fun! Tomorrow will seem so lame because I will be itching to get out of there. I have a deadline for a report on one of the database modules I am 'supposed' to be working on but I have a good excuse so that I can extend the deadline until next week. I need to have a chat with my ex-manager about some things and that will take up a proportion of the day. I will also go check on some other things in other offices and generally make any excuse not to do my own work and to be sociable. There is also the fact that the day is cut short by half an hour (as it always is on Fridays) and I have some time to get ready and eat something before I have to meet my friend at the train station at 7pm. The only down side will be that I won't be around for my friends online but then I will be seeing some of them for real very soon. Wohoo!

I'm going to kill myself with drink and dancing on Friday night (ALL night) and then we are going to find somewhere to have breakfast and sober up. Following that we will go do some shopping because there are some things I need to get in London that I can't get anywhere else and I need to get them before my holiday. After that I am meeting another friend at 2pm and we are going to a Halloween party that night. On the Sunday I will probably end up at the cinema and then I will eventually make it home, very tired and probably looking like shit but with a big grin on my face from the events at the weekend. Wow, I have really worked up to this weekend haven't I? Talk about hype.... I hope it lives up to the expectations! I just had this vision of me whooping like 'Java' the gibbon when I am out on Friday night. Oh God.... please don't let me get so drunk that I do that in public.
